Slow Refresh after installing Nvidia 340
I am using Mint 17 on one desktop and Mint 17.1 on another desktop.
They have the same GeForce 550 Ti video card and I was originally using the stable Nvidia 331 driver.
About a month or two ago I noticed that there was an update for Nvidia 340, so naturally I wanted to update the driver.
Immediately after installing and rebooting I notice a "lag" with typing and interacting with windows.
Example 1:
I can open a text file with Text Editor and typing will take an extra second for each letter. Even backspacing takes a second and sometimes I over backspace and delete letters I didn't want to delete.
Example 2:
I will open an image in Image Viewer and cycling through images will either skip or take a second to flip to the next image.
Example 3:
Installing games with PlayOnLinux there will be a "lag" when going to the next window or clicking "Next"
Sometimes clicking the windows its-self can make it advance to the next screen.
These symptoms never occurred before the Nvidia update.
I've been updating both systems in hope to receive a fix, but nothing has fixed it yet.
System 1:
Mint 17 64-bit
Theme - Windows8
AMD Phantom II 3-core
Corsair 8 Gig RAM
GeForce 550 Ti
Nvidia 340
Samsung 120GB SSD HD
System 2:
Mint 17.1 64-bit
Theme - Windows7-Aero
Intel Core2Duo
3 Gig RAM
GeForce 550 Ti
Nvidia 340
Western Digital 150 GB spindle HD

Can you use the Driver Manager to switch to a different driver?
Menu > Administration > Driver Manager
Menu > Administration > Driver Manager
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI

Re: Slow Refresh after installing Nvidia 340
Known problem for the nvidia-340 in combination with Cinnamon. For my video card, I could thankfully downgrade the driver to the older nvidia-304 (which solved my identical problems immediately).

Dang! I was hoping there would be a fix or some thing...
I really don't want to downgrade, I would rather upgrade to a newer Nvidia driver if I had to, but I want to use stable versions too.
So hard to decide...
Strange that you say its a "known problem" because I had a hard time finding anyone else with this problem. Hence why I finally posted it after a few months of waiting.

Well, I've seen several similar instances mentioned on this forum....Booman wrote:Dang! I was hoping there would be a fix or some thing...

Why would you always prefer a newer driver? For older video cards, an older driver often performs better. Because newer drivers are usually mainly aiming at newer video cards.

Re: Slow Refresh after installing Nvidia 340
Normally a newer driver has fixes and patches. Sometimes even for games.
I guess my GeForce 550 Ti is an older card, but it runs most games on high settings at 1680x1050 resolution.
So old or not, its a great card.
I just wonder if there is an update for Cinnamon, nemo or something else that could fix this problem?
Maybe updating to Mint 17.2 or 17.3 might fix it?

Old wisdom: updates are things that fix old, known bugs and introduce new, unknown bugs....
Judge a driver by its performance, not by its version number.

Re: Slow Refresh after installing Nvidia 340
Yes, I have experienced this as well
I don't normally update unless something is broken, but people always "hype" new Nvidia drivers are better than the old ones...
All of my games still run fine! Even Wine gaming runs GREAT
Its Cinnamon that is causing grief.

Re: Slow Refresh after installing Nvidia 340
I upgraded to Mint 17.2 over the weekend and even updated my Nvidia drivers to Nvidia 346
The problem still exists, even clicking menu's is "off" a bit and sometimes I accidentally click the wrong button because it isn't highlighted.
Kinda frustrating, but I'll have to get used to it.
I post gaming guides for Linux gaming on a weekly basis and its important to stay up-to-date
I hope there will eventually be a fix for this so I can be more productive

Re: Slow Refresh after installing Nvidia 340
I just got a Nautilus update
1:3.10.1-0ubuntu9.10
So far things seem to be working faster
I thought Mint 17.2 was using Nemo?

Nemo is a fork of Nautilus, so it still shares most of its code:Booman wrote:I just got a Nautilus update

Re: Slow Refresh after installing Nvidia 340
oh didn't know that
I swear Mint 17 was using Nemo but maybe updating to Mint 17.2 installed Nautilus
either way, it seems to be running faster allready
