OK..
I took this a step futher.
After reading through the entire post, it was assumed the panel became corrupted after editing.
A fresh install disproved that, but what if the panel was corrupted on install?
So I created a new panel on top, deleted the stock install panel completely, and deleted the panel folder
in /.gconf/apps, then rebooted, this rebuilt the panel, and I added my usual apps to it.
Only 12hrs have passed, but no crashes so far. Will keep you informed, but if someone else wants to try in the meantime.

Crashhhhhh.
Happened again. The strange thing is, once it starts it appears to get worse.
I'm out of ideas now.
I will watch this thread closely, but for now i'm off back to Ubuntu 11.04.
Whatever the problem is it's not happening on Ubuntu.

I think I may have found a "solution" for that problem: I unselected 'Lock to Panel' from every item on the Panel. I haven't had any crashes since that. Can you verify this?
Another problem I have is that every time I try to access the Window menu (left top corner of every window) some or all windows lose their heading bars and borders. Has anyone any solution or workaround for that?

I have 4gb ram, 32-bit system with PAE-kernel, so this bug does not affect only 64bit systems.
I can confirm that after unchecking "complete lockdown of all panels" in Ubuntu Tweak I did not have problem with clock any longer... :wink:

Hmm... is this the same bug which is discussed here?

Yup, it's also in the release notes for Ubuntu 11.04 as a known issue:
In the classic session gnome-panel sometimes fails to load applets. (716714)
It's a race condition, where the applets are sometimes being registered and called before they are loaded and available. No real good solution yet, don't know why it hasn't been fixed upstream, but the best hack I've found to deal with it for now is to create a "reset" button, with a custom application launcher, that does "killall gnome-panel". Then keep killing it until it loads properly.

This bug isn't even conrfirmed upstream. I don't know, maybe the developers have a high Luck stat, or a Race Condition Resistance perk, so this never happened to them :D

I noticed that the bug started appearing after I've set user doesn't have to enter password on login (login is done automatically, just by clicking the username in the login window)
Do you also have auto-login configured?

Have you enycrypted your home dir? Some people suggested that also may be a problem https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/727660

I believe this bug has something to do with the session settings

No, no encryption.
The last time I reinstalled, Mint Panel crashed on the 1st reboot.
That was it for me, although I mess with Mint Debian, my main Operating system is now Ubuntu 11.04.
Never crashed once.

No encryption, no autologin, no locked items, no special features. With new install & new user the only crashing item is the Mint menu !! Also the Mint installation livedvd has the same crashing problem.

Well, that's exactly why race conditions are so terrible. You can spend days fighting the effect instead of the cause... :?

Is there any news/fix for this bug ?
I have a desktop computer (intel i5) and I have the same problem when I boot. My home directory is not encrypted, I have autologin. I've been unable to fix it.

I'd like to install Linux for my parents (switching from windows) and if they see that kind of bug when they start the computer, they won't give a long try to linux mint :)
I could install Mint 10 but they have a i3 2105 CPU (Sandy Bridge) and I think it's no compatible with mint10, isn't it ?
Thanks

FYI , Mint 12 is approximately one month away. May want to consider a short wait, if only to see if the latest Mint release has squashed those pesky bugs.

Can you upload your script somewhere else ? Like on hosting sites (mediafire, zippyshare ....)
or copy/paste on pastebin.com
does your script really work ?
Today I've received the computer for my parents. I've installed mint11 and ... at first boot "the panel encountered a problem ...". I can't give them a computer with this annoying bug. Then I decided to install mint10 but as I expected, it doesn't work well with intel HD video driver (core i3). I can use the pc but I can't get desktop effects work.
Please help :)

hi

this script will reload the panel whenever you get the annoying
"the panel encountered a problem when loading" error.
as far as i know this error has not been fixed yet and is found
in many distros.

the script works by checking to see if an error occurred with
gnome-panel and then it keeps reloading it until there are no
errors left. the on screen error messages will automatically
disappear.

there is a 2 second delay before the panel is checked and reloaded.
on slower computers (if you still get errors) you may need to edit
sk-panel to increase the "sleep" delay to 3 or more.

on my machine, when the panel encounters problems, it sometimes takes
up to 4 seconds before the routine kicks in and removes the errors.
it has been running successfully for a week now.

instructions.

--- create a new file names "sk-panel", copy and paste the following into it ---
#!/bin/bash
# sk-panel (gpl) 2011, s kazim.
# restart routine

user=$(who)
file=/home/${user%% *}/.xsession-errors
check=gnome-panel

while [ "$(grep $check $file)" ] || [ "$1" = "--force" ]
do
errors=$(grep $check $file | wc -l)
killall $check
sleep 2
[ $(grep $check $file | wc -l) = $errors ] && break
done
-- save file and exit ---

sudo -i (root)

cp sk-panel /usr/sbin/

chmod 755 /usr/sbin/sk-panel

gedit /etc/rc.local
(before the exit 0 line add:)
sk-panel

save the file and reboot your computer.

ps. please report your results for others.
