Workspace not resizing after unplugging external monitor

Post by jean.jordaan »

For about a week, I've been using an external monitor. Mostly, it's been working great.
Tonight after unplugging the external monitor, the workspace didn't resize --- it's still double-height. My mouse pointer disappears into the void if I move off the top edge of the screen.
I tried switching users, but that didn't help (the 2nd user gets the correct size workspace).
I tried going to Displays in the control panel --- this correctly shows only one display, but doesn't update the workspace size.
I tried switching to console (ctrl-alt-F1) and back to X (ctrl-alt-F7), no joy.

I'm afraid it's gone from "working great" to falling apart all over the place.

Currently I'm experiencing that X boots up into a black screen. Switching to text console and back sometimes restored the screen. Sometimes the X console showed only some system log lines. The external display showed "no cable connected".
When logging out and logging back into an OpenBox session, suddenly the external display is active. However it's mirrored (same display on laptop/external), and can't be changed for desktop to span monitors.
I logged out and logged back into MATE, and lose the external display again: the control panel shows both displays with the external display black (Off). When I toggle that to On, the control panel display shows the external display blue, but in fact it's still showing "no cable connected".
I rebooted and logged into MATE: X showed up and the external monitor is active, but again I only get mirrored displays. When I uncheck "mirrored displays" in the control panel I can position the two displays relative to each other, but this doesn't take effect.

To make it even more fun, fonts in various places are suddenly uselessly small.
