Wake from suspend; ugly fonts and windows after reboot

Post by jean.jordaan »

Hibernate/suspend is still a massive pain.
Hibernate fails to wake up most of the time. Suspend has been working fine, but also fails unpredictably every now and then.
Especially when using vagrant/virtualbox, sometimes the laptop doesn't wake from suspend.

Lately I've been experiencing a different failure. It started after I began to use an external monitor, but I don't know if that's related.
The failure is as follows: when I open the laptop, I get a responsive mouse pointer on a black background. If there is an external monitor plugged in, the pointer travels across both screens.
However no windows show up, and right-click doesn't do anything.

If I kill X (ctrl-alt-backspace), I get my desktop back (though all X apps have been killed). Also, at this point my connection with D-BUS and gnome keyring has been lost, so I might as well reboot to get back to a sane environment.

I rebooted, and suddenly my fonts are ugly, especially in Vim and in my terminal. Also window decorations look clunky.
