I have Linux Mint 17.1, MATE edition, on a laptop with a second monitor attached. Everything works great, except for one small annoyance: I can't maximize windows on the laptop's monitor. When I try to do so MATE simply maximizes the window to my second monitor. I *could* just drag the window over to the correct monitor, except that monitor has the task bar on it, so windows on it need to have a slightly smaller height when maximized.
As a result, every time I want to maximize a window on this monitor I have to do it "by hand". Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? It worked perfectly fine in previous versions of Mint/MATE ...

Re: Can't Maximize on Second Monitor
Which is the primary monitor, the notebook or the external ??
--that's the one that is affected by your desktop actions..
Also can depend on the GPU used, they often have multiple monitor apps available for GPU control..

You could also have a workplace(s) in use, and switch over to the other desktop (aka virtual desktop)

As to why MATE isn't working for you. don't know

--settings available, review of same may be helpful, but at least worth looking at to see file locations and conf, available
--linked within Arch info, MATE's pages..

- Or it is the window manager, compiz or other within MATE..

- MateConf stores data in the user space in $HOME/.mateconf:
desktop/mate for desktop settings
apps ..
- MateConf tool
mateconftool-2 is the MATE configuration tool. It is meant to be used from command line
$ mateconftool-2 -R /desktop/mate
That will display some of the MATE desktop settings.
MateConf editor
The MateConf Editor is a graphical application and as such is more targeted towards the general user

Re: Can't Maximize on Second Monitor
Thanks for the response.
However, as for only one of them affecting my desktop actions, that isn't how it's been in previous editions of Mint/MATE. In all previous editions I've been able to maximize windows to both monitors just fine.
Unfortunately I have no idea how to determine that (nothing in the monitor preferences says anything about one monitor being "primary").Which is the primary monitor, the notebook or the external ??

Thanks for the links, but I haven't had to manually edit xorg.conf (or any other graphics config file) in years,so I'm not clear on what to do. Plus as I understand it these files are now auto-generated by the GUI config tools (eg. NVidia X Server Settings), so even if I found a fix wouldn't it just get overwritten as soon as I used the GUI again? Also can depend on the GPU used, they often have multiple monitor apps available for GPU control..

Re: Can't Maximize on Second Monitor
Still looking for a fix to this issue if anyone knows one. Obviously it's not the most important issue, but it is annoying.
