Mate 1.8 on Mint 13 Maya?

Post by fullmoonguru »

Anyone using Mate 1.8 on Mint 13? I want to fix this LibreOffice bug that's constantly disappearing my panels.

Yeah I know, why not just upgrade to Mint 17? Because I have a heavily tweaked version of 13 deployed on about a dozen computers. It's going to take a while to get 17 set up how I want & I just would like to fix this bug between now & then.

As indicated in this thread, the solution is to either turn off the compositing or update Marco to 1.8.1.

When I try to install it on my 64bit system I get a libglib 2 dependancy error. So I download that & when I try to load it I get another error that it's going to break an existing dependancy. Maybe it's fine but I don't want to hose my system doing this. I searched but couldn't find any instructions on how to upgrade to Marco 1.8.1 on Mint 13.

It's already well documented. As found in another thread, I turned off compositing, installed xcompmgr, and set it to run at startup. Seems to have worked.

Which repository did you use for installing MATE 1.8?

Err... "mint-import"... "qiana"... :?
That's a package built for Mint 17, no wonder it has dependencies corresponding to Mint 17, and won't install in Mint 13.

But I actually was asking where did you get the whole MATE 1.8 before that.

I didn't install Mate 1.8. I was just thinking about it which is why I was asking.

So you've just tried to install Marco 1.8.1 into your default MATE 1.2 (or whatever is in Mint 13)? It won't work.

You cannot install MATE 1.8 or higher on Linux Mint 13. The last supported version is MATE 1.6.

I new it wasn't officially supported. That's why I was curious if anyone had been using it. Anyway, the xcomp thing is working so that's given me what I need until I make the jump to 17.

The issue is not with official support. MATE 1.8 needs libraries and dependencies that are not (and will never be) available in LM13. In a similar manner, Cinnamon support stops at 2.0 on LM13. This can probably be circumvented by "hacking" the standard LM13 installation with alternate repositories but you will end up with an hybrid monster while a migration to LM17 would have solved everything in this respect.
