Can't log into Gnome or Cinnamon

Post by ninhalo5 »

Well, I have LMDE installed with cinnamon, Gnome and MATE. up until this morning all the desktops were working now when I try to log into Gnome or Cinnamon it will try to load. it'll show the desktop background for a second then give me the screen that is in the image attached. All I did this AM was add the NVIDIA control panel(which wiped out x) so I ran the aptitude update and ran aptitude install nvidia-kernel-dkms. This got me back up from a tty boot and gave me my x back, but now I can't get into Gnome or Cinnamon. Gnome classic and MATE works like a charm...
I checked my xorg log file and don't really see anything that would cause this issue

Any ideas?
Thanks

I got the same thing after updating but can login to fallback mode here is my xsessions log. Just not smart enough to search for the correct answers...lol...but fallback mode is nice.

Made some headway created a new user and was able to login to Cinnamon and Gnome now to just figure out how to fix my main account.

I have the same situation after installing update pack 4. I can only use Gnome classic.

Maybe it's because you have the option to start compiz at boot.

In fall back mode : terminal --> gnome-session-properties & --> uncheck Compiz.

It worked for me this way.

That seemed to be the issue... kudos Killer!!
It's funny I tried removing compiz from the startup menu under Mate and it didn't change anything.
Guess this presents a new issue and being I can't script my way out of a wet paper bag, is there a script out there already that will allow compiz to boot only on those 2 desktops and not the other?
This is Linux so it has to be possible.
Thanks

Fine if it helps you ;)

I don't know for the script because I don't need compiz anymore. I am just using Cinnamon, and not interested into MATE. Don't want to have all the apps installed again with a different name.

But I bet that you can easily script compiz to boot only with MATE. You should just find the file that is loaded when you choose MATE on GDM3 and add a line in it ;)

Good luck !

I just realized that. Instead of just renaming it, they had to be a self-contained packages. But they were installed with UP4 anyway.

Some of the MATE packages were installed with UP4 but very few. Caja, Pluma... are not installed on my computer.

You're right again. I even installed MATE before UP4. Maybe that is why I now have double apps ... But I don't want to remove them because I might use Gnome again. Well, that's for another thread.
