I might be wrong, but if you are using Nvidia drivers then all those libgl mesa packages do not get used. Little point in having them installed.GeneC wrote:Got Gnome Shell back as well

@GregE:
I love how fast the Linux devs can fix most bugs like this. It makes me feel sorry for folks on proprietary OSes that have to wait a while to get updates, and then have to pray they won't break anything in the process that will mean another month or more before fixing them.
@wayne128:
Thanks. The Gnome-shell issue doesn't bother me because I'm a KDE guy but I plan on cloning my drive anyway before starting.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jun 14th
Good Morning to all from St. Louis Mo. USA
If anyone out there is a Father. Happy Father's Day.
OK now to my probelm.
Looks like I need to learn something about themes. At least that is what I think has caused my problem.
I was messing with themes yesterday. Evidently I changed some setting that when I start now for most of my DE (XFCE, KDE, GNOME) my desktop starts. I can briefly see the desktop then it goes black and all I am left with is a mouse cursor.
Everything is there because if I click on the screen if there is something there it click on it does it I think. I can't really tell cause the screen stays black.
I can CTRL-ALT-F1 out to a login terminal.
Also I get the first login window when the computer starts.
I am in the only DE that seems to work right now. FVWM.
Thanks
Dan

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jun 14th
Dan,
Try - from FVWM rename /home/dan/.themes to .themes.sav and then make a new folder .themes
See what happens.
ps
try making a new user name, logging into that account and see if everything works OK with default settings. You might need to build a new /home folder.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jun 14th
Greg,
Hmmm, that didn't make a difference. Still a black screeen.
It's funny tho I was listening to a internet radio station via Firefox and when I start with XFCE I can hear the music playing but an all black screen.
What the heck did I do?
I see the desktop for a second and then it goes away.
Thanks

New user got things back.
I hate when I have to recreate all my settings again.
I must have done this a dozen times.
I guess we all have.
The fun of Linux.
Good to start fresh sometimes.
Thanks for the help.
Now on to reconfiguration.

I finally got to the point where I'm ready to move my LMDE + KDE box over to Sid, and I found something disturbing.
Removing linux-sound-base, without seeing anything to replace it with, looks like a deal breaker. Can anyone give me any advice on this? Am I missing something that, were it a snake, would bite me where I sit?

Supposedly that's just for the OSS drivers and I guess most people use ALSA now? I'm so behind the curve on linux sound, I don't know the difference between ALSA, Phonon, PulseAudio, backends (VLC, gstreamer), etc. All I know is I tried KDE recently and my sound was really crappy, so maybe I'm not the best to be commenting.
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jun 14th
Thanks ericcc. I thought I had seen something about it but couldn't track it down. I didn't get a complaint from Phonon (thanks to KDE's settings window for helping me remember which sound system I use quickly) so I think I'm good without linux-sound-base. I just saw that package name and got worried, and since I couldn't track it down in a forum search I figured I'd ask. I owe you a round, ericcc.
I'm getting close to my log off time for today so I'll give it another go tomorrow once I catch the highlights from tonight's Dodgers/A's game. And back my system up yet again. i can't believe running backups is getting old.

Some time ago when that sound base removal happened to my d.u. I also hasitate for a while..
so I clone it, took the risk and still survive after d.u with the sound base removed.
Sound still OK

yes, ymmv. just clone first. never know what Sid can do for you.
good luck
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jun 14th
I know what you mean wayne. Although today I discovered KDE's answer to LibreOffice is in Sid so I'd like to check it out, on top of the fact that I had already decided I wanted the newer KDE that's in Sid. I had played in that sandbox on my old laptop so it's not uncharted territory, but I definitely make sure this cat lover doesn't assault the poor pooch in the process. I've long told folks that if you're not willing to take the risk of being on the bleeding edge please stay in the kiddie pool, so you're preaching to the choir.
But I'm looking forward to getting back into Sid. It lets me gloat at the poor people using Mint KDE who think they have the "newest and best."

There is a reason none of the Debian sid based distros use Gnome, it breaks often.
Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jun 14th
Of no interest to Craigevil. But for others who use Google as their calendar and who are also Gnome users - this is what I did.
I only ever used Evolution to serve Google Calendar through Gnome Calendar. So I took this opportunity to do what I should have done long ago and that is integrate Google Calendar directly into Gnome Calendar.
Make sure you have Google services active in your Gnome Online Accounts settings
These instructions are for Ubuntu but work fine in Sid/Gnome
http://www.webupd8.org/2011/09/google-c ... ation.html
Run dconf-editor and find org -> gnome -> applications -> office -> calendar and change the exec value from evolution to google-chrome https://www.google.com/calendar or firefox https://www.google.com/calendar or chromium or iceweasel
It took me a few goes to get the python script to successfully autostart. You need to run it manually a couple of times then it seems happy to autorun on startup.
Now on statup my Calendar is populated and when I click on Open Calendar it goes to my online calendar. With Chrome it simply opens a new tab if Chrome is already running, or starts Chrome with a single calendar tab if it is not.
So goodbye to Evolution.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jun 14th
I love XFCE and I've been trying to figure out how to get Google Calendar integrated with Orage. So far the best description I've seen is to put the commands on this page in a cron job. But note the location is different for the orage ics file, it's at ~/.local/share/orage/orage.ics. But I'm having the issue that I like to keep multiple calendars in google to separate out my activities. Unfortunately the google interface separates out the private ics link for each calendar. Looking into merge-ics to see if that will work.GregE wrote:Of no interest to Craigevil. But for others who use Google as their calendar and who are also Gnome users - this is what I did.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jun 14th
Only for the brave or the backed up.
Wine Multiarch has come to Debian Sid 64bit. If you are a wine user then this is actually a good thing. But it is not easy. You need to remove ia32-libs and thus programs that require ia32libs. One example is Skype. When you are done you then need the 32bit versions. Skype 32bit is now working fine on my 64bit Sid system.
Open Synaptic and install wine64-bin. This is a dummy package. Open terminal and run winecfg and it will tell you what to do next to convert your system to multiarch. Then install all the wine :386 packages and finally remove the wine64 dummy package. I had to manually play with symlinks in /usr/bin so everything points to wine32 as the executable. Make a symlink wine -> wine32 and it will solve most problems. The is no wine executable in /usr/bin any more so just make one with the symlink (well that is what I did, the other option is to make sure all your wine programs point to wine32). I had a few issues with dependencies that took time to work around. I could not install the windows sane stuff, but I do not use a scanner under wine anyway.
I only use two programs under wine. My Kobo ebook software and Microsoft Return to the Arcade (directx3 from the nineties - Bill Gates finest hour). Galaxian works beautifully.
Take care as this process has the potential to play havoc with the unwary.

Re: LMDE BREAKAGES - (Tracking SID!) - Jun 14th
Greg - I thought I'd give this a try, but I fell at the first hurdle. Installing wine64-bin-unstable involves removing wine-bin-unstable, which in turn means that winecfg is no longer present on the system. As I'm only really interested in the unstable version of Wine, this move looks like a non-starter at the moment.
