Use aptitude (full-upgrade). It will always offer to install just the packages that won't need others being removed.

zerozero, thanks for the warning, my debian-gnome-sid still old working waiting for perl to settle down

however I went to check aptosid-kde-sid, no perl thingy, so du and it went ok, pleasant surprise, always
then I went to du aptosid-xfce-sid, also OK, it loaded xfce4.8 and reboot all working, another pleasant surprise

meanwhile, Debian-xfce-sid broke big time,
reinstall on one new partition from fresh, haha, white screen of death
reinstall yet another new partition from fresh, haha, gdm screen OK, no mouse pointer, no keyboard, cannot do antything. don't anyhow play with sid , always must have other working partitions ( i have many) before playing

aptitude full-upgrade is like apt-get dist-upgrade. But now you're saying it, yes, the solution I talked about would be just like apt-get upgrade (aptitude offers several ways to deal with the removals).

The Perl packages all now install with a minimum of removal (xchat and perl5.10 were removed when I upgraded, neither of which I need).

gstreamer0.10-plugins-good is currently broken

xserver-xorg-core still has the segfault bug in it, I'm waiting for it to clear apt-listbugs before upgrading it.

All upgrade here except for udev, and k9copy.

apt-get dist-upgrade
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Calculating upgrade... Done
The following packages have been kept back:
k9copy libudev0 udev
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 3 not upgraded.

udev still has a couple of scary bugs and k9copy is being autoheld.
