best howto for installing LMDE on LVM on LUKS?

Post by TomRoche »

What's the {best, easiest, most straightforward, least editing required} {howto, tutorial, instructions} for installing LMDE on LVM on LUKS? Why I ask:

My experimentation box runs LMDE (as does my production box). Both have hard partitioning: i.e., /boot, /home, /usr, /var (etc) on separate partitions created with gparted. Soon after UP5 arrived, I tried to install UP5 on my experimentation box, but the install failed when my /var partition totally filled :-( I've been meaning to update to LVM-on-LUKS, so I guess now is the time.

Hence I'm looking for guidance on how to install LMDE-on-LVM-on-LUKS on a "fresh box" (since I'm willing to blow away everything except its windows partition, and even that if I must). After a few hours on this forum, it looks like my best option is to use CyL's tutorial here with edits as suggested by UnrealMiniMe here. But I'd appreciate straightforward alternatives you might suggest. Even more I'd appreciate an LMDE installer that supported LVM-on-LUKS, or even an LMDE installer that came with UP5 (instead of 201204) :-)

There a couple of methods that will let you install LMDE in an encripted LVM and keep other OS that you might have installed in you HD.

The first one is really original and quite easy: Install LMDE in a virtual machime, and then move it to an encrypted LVM. http://www.netzgewitter.com/2011/09/how ... ard-drive/

The second one is install Debian wheezy / squeazy folowing this long and very well explained tutorial, and after that changing your repos. http://scarygliders.net/2011/12/06/how- ... ncryption/

Thanks for the pointer! That tutorial looks quite comprehensive regarding installing Wheezy on LVM on LUKS. I'll definitely print that off ASAP. Unfortunately I've gotta prepare for an event, but I should be trying this Decemberish. Might even try to create an editable tutorial @ Mint>My Tutorials (which in my case is http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/from/12687 )

That I think I can handle :-)
