Locked in one window - SOLVED

Post by Hagenblad »

Hello.

Long time Ubuntu user I was disapinoted about the APP-look, and also I can't get used to the x-button is on the left side :-)
SO, Mint 17 Green (cinnemon?) here we go. Installation was fine but I ran into a problem right from the start I haven't found a solution for. I work in one window, like firefox and i works fine. when trying to same a pic, get a message or another window pops up, everything freezes. Buttons still work and Alt-F4 to kill it, also found problems with a NAS, so I tried KDE instead. No freezes anymore, but it takes longer to start up. Another widow problem. I can have more than one wondow up, but only the first one works. alt-tab I can shift windows, but do nothing, because it's still the first one that's active. The start button does not work either. It's like the mouse only works in the active window.
Ideas?

Only one window possible

Post by Hagenblad »

Tried to install Mint for the first time and it went fine. But I have a serious problem, which is pretty much the same in cinnamon, KDE and now XFCE. As long as you have one window open, no problem, but more makes the new window inactive. So I still click around in the old one. Alt-tab works, but olny to the first active window.
Example: I surf around with firefox, and have several tabs open. I download a file, and a new window comes on top of firefox. The new window seems frozen, I cant click on it och close it. The start (LM) button does not work and everything exept firefox is impossible to use. Ctrl-F4 kills the second window and that still works.
I can then click LM, but nothing in it, since it also is a new window. I can use the keyboard to move around the menues.

Ideas?

With a new machine, you might need the newest kernel, or at least newest drivers.
Please post the result of

Code: Select all

inxi -Fzx
(inside Code tags)
Mint 18.2 Cinnamon, Quad core AMD A8-3870 with Radeon HD Graphics 6550D, 8GB DDR3, Ralink RT2561/RT61 802.11g PCI

I would say get a more recent kernel, maybe as recent as 3.17 released on October 6, 2014
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

If it doesn't work, you can always fall back to the old kernel on the Grub Menu.

Found some other things.

If the window I'm in has a list, like in the task manager I can click on the rows in the list, but not the menues of the window, or move it.

In youtube.com I also saw two things. I f the film/song starts with an advertisement it's not possible to click "skip add", or pause it. not possible to click inside the film but links beside it works fine.

Getting stranger....

Firefox issues ?
Reset option within Firefox can at least get back the default settings, then check results
--you may want to save bookmarks first

Are you using an external program to manage images/pics ??
--where do you pick the pics (images) from ?? to save to where (locally, assumed.)

And does the method below not work

a window problem..

- Reset doesn't matter, not even formatting the disk and reinstall cinnamon, kde or ubuntu. Same and also outside of firefox.

- No, and it's not only pics, right now I can't press the start (LM) button

- Yes, everything works till it freezes. Tried two times, first was ok, second not. I can't click save. I can use the keyboard and press save.

So, I tried my old motherboard with CPU and memory, rest of it was new. Same crap. Finally I tried a different keyboard and finally that solved the problem. Saitec is the brand.

Thanks for all the help.
