Problems with virtualbox [SOLVED]

I have virtualbox installed and all was running very well when suddenly... all went wrong. When I shut down the computer I received one red "failed" after the message "Cannot unload module vboxdrv ... failed!"
When I try to launch virtualbox, the whole system freezes.
Now I was following the intructions to install gwibber and I received that in terminal:

What can I do? I really wouldn't like to uninstall virtualbox, because I need to use QwarkExpress in Windows and I lost a lot of time to install fonts, and so on...

First, you won't 'lose' anything if you re-install or remove VirtualBox, nor will you lose your installation customization on Windows unless you delete or damage files in your Windows.vdi (or whatever you called your Windows virtual machine) or other settings in the ~/.VirtualBox folder.

It looks as if you were blindly clicking on links from within VirtualBox.

Remember, Linux is NOT Windows.

I am just a beginner to intermediate Linux user, myself, so I can't guide you to reverse what you may have done. The only recommendation I have is to open package manager or Synaptic, search for VirtualBox, find your VirtualBox installation, right click on it and select 'Mark for Complete Removal', then select the Apply symbol in the top action area. Now re-install VirtualBox, and hopefully your problem will be solved.

If you install VirtualBox from the Mint repositories, Mint will handle the updates for you with relatively few problems, although the version in the repositories may not be the very latest, and the OSE version doesn't support USB access from within the virtual machine. If you go to VirtualBox.org and install from .deb files, you should be careful to NOT click on the box about installing the latest and greatest version! If you do want the bleeding edge, my recommendation when you see a notice of an upgrade is to shut down VirtualBox, open your browser & download the upgrade .deb file, then either double click the file or use terminal commands to install the upgrade.

Maybe someone else has a better recommendation.

In fact, the problem is worse. I can't install any uppdate anymore, because of the virtualbox problem, that makes any install freeze.

Anyone: should I uninstall virtualbox?
And no, I don't randomly click anything I see. I'm using Linux mint since felicia and switched to lmde a month ago, both in my work and home machines. I my work everything is ok, including virtualbox.

I had yesterday the same problem. The only solution i found was to uninstall virtualbox make full update including level 4 and 5 updates and reinstall virtualbox after a reboot.

I don t know if the problem will persist but for now everything works as it should.

You can try to recreate the virtualbox kernel modules first. Open a terminal and execute

If that doesn't help reinstall virtualbox

Thank you zole052 and dfx, but it didn't work. First I tried dfx's advices, but I kept receiving the same message: cannot unload module vboxdrv... Failed. Then: starting virtualbox kernel modules... and freeze the terminal.
Then I unisntalled virtualbox with synaptic, but when I installed it (via deb. package) I received the same error message. I had to stop it with ctrl+c.

I don't know what to do now...

Of course I'm not running any virtual machine, I couldn't even if I wanted to.
As for your questions:
sudo modprobe -rv vboxdrv just gets no answer, terminal blinks and nothing happens. After some minutes, I stopped it with ctrl+c.

You can prevent the start of virtualbox kernel modules by editing /etc/init.d/vboxdrv. Just insert

at the beginning of the file, save it and reboot. Afterwards lsmod should display you no virtualbox modules. Then remove the 'return' from /etc/init.d/vboxdrv and run it

Hm, according to the first output vbox kernel modules are created and loaded. After/durring the installation process of vbox it fails (maybe because it's already loaded) and some kind of dump is created. Issue seems to start here

Yes, i left the 'return' removed, and I tried do run virtualbox despite the error on the install. This was stupid, because froze the computer completely, and I had to reboot with the power button. Result: back to the "Cannot unload module vboxdrv ... failed!" message. But I'm patient.
Ideas?

You could retry the steps you did before the (re)install without uninstalling vbox

The other method I still have in my mind would be a bit more radical

It worked!!! Never thought I would be so happy to see old XP starting... on virtualbox, of course!
Everything is working fine now, I even updated guest additions...

The alternative would have been to completly uninstall virtualbox with

aptitude purge virtualbox-3.2

and install it again afterwards. This solution also deletes all the settings and virtual machines you have. So it's important to create a backup of the .virtualbox folder in your home directory where this files normally reside
