Login problems

From a week ago, I can not login normally. After password, I receive the following message:
(process:283): Glib WARNING **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id(0)
I have to reboot, use recovery mode, log in text mode and use startx to enter KDE.
I think it is due to some update.
I have Isadora KDE . Netbook Megaware Atom N270, 2G RAM, 250GHD, besides windows 7

You may get help - but more specifics are needed.

What kind of changes did you do since it last worked? Did you do package updates? Did you get errors when doing so?
Did you reinstall any of your OSses? From a console: Does startx get you a normal KDE session? can you list your directory structure and find your home directory and such?

In any case: Do login from a console.
First, I would recommend any package update fixes that went wrong:
type

This surprisingly often fixed package / dependency issues, especially after distribution upgrades.

Maybe you post some more information.

... one more thing:
As you may know, the boot process is logged in /var/log/messages, also accessible via command dmesg (sudo or root privileges required)

I remember a big update, automatic. after that, I installed Libreoffice from a download. During installation some strange things happened, as plasma failure twice, need to reboot two times. I can not remember exactly if the problem appeared at second reboot or day after, in the morning.

Yes, but nothing different.

Yes, but not in the first attempt. I logged as root (normally!!) and tried to make something at KDM startup manager. From a second desperate attempt on, I can log at console.

Yes

In any case: Do login from a console.
First, I would recommend any package update fixes that went wrong:

I made it. The answer was "0 updated packages, 0 new installed, 0 to be removed and 13 not updated" (the answer was in portuguese and I don't know if the translation is perfect)

A "download" that is not part of the .deb structure of Mint/Ubuntu makes matters complicated of course. Then, you need not bother with apt-get -f update anymore as your system may be very "unclean", I am afraid. Where did Libreoffice install?

That could be a problem UNLESS you just uninstall it if you can. did it then install cleanly, or did it give errors/warnings? Did it pull other .deb packages (if you used gdebi or relatives).
Did you set a repository and use apt-get or aptitude or a package gui to install it? (-> try to uninstall it)


(2) OR was it a .tar.gz archive -- and if so, where did it install? Nice and clean in /opt for xample? Or in /usr/local, still all together and not spread elsewhere?
If possible (and if the install wasn't clean/compact [thru a "make install"] and everything was spread everywhere) there may be a equivalent "make uninstall" option or some such routine.

WHAT I WOULD TRY as mentioned is uninstall libreoffice for now. It may not be the culprit, but I have learned NOT to believe in **coincidence in time**,
i.e. when you do something (install libreoffice) and you have then an error - then through some back-door the two are very likely related.

You do seem to have a messed-up X-config file.
Another log file is the X log file -- that one may be informative if X crashed on you:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log, or a similar name at that location

Yes, I downloaded it from libreoffice site. It was a .tar full of .debs.

I have just uninstalled it using synaptic. I chose complete remotion.

No, I looked for, but there only had the openoffice. Before installing libreoffice, I had installed BROffice, brasilian version of openoffice, now linked to libreoffice.

I uninstalled libreoffice and all traces of openoffice and broffice.
At first attempt, no changes at login.

A normal screen appears, with my user, waiting for the password. After that blinks a small white rectangle at the upper left corner, a blue screen appears sliced horizontally and, first it returns to initial login screen and second the screen becomes black with that text: "(process 293...."

Yes, I downloaded it from libreoffice site. It was a .tar full of .debs.

No. I am sure.

WHAT I WOULD TRY as mentioned is uninstall libreoffice for now. It may not be the culprit, but I have learned NOT to believe in **coincidence in time**,
i.e. when you do something (install libreoffice) and you have then an error - then through some back-door the two are very likely related.


I uninstalled libreoffice and all traces of openoffice and broffice.

Just to be sure, did you then do startx as root or as normal user?

Normal user. I only logged as root to try to do something, but it was exceptional. Normally I use "su" and "sudo" (semi) when needed.

That is important to know. Because if it was as root, then we still may be in the write permission problem area for the normal user.
(AFAIK, root logins from the KDM are by default not allowed - however from the console they are possible).


It seemed strange to me to log as root, but it happened.


What did you do to KDM startup manager? Did you edit /etc/kde4rc?

I only accessed by Settings>Advanced>Startup manager, chose the initial screen and checked to start automatically with my normal user.

What was the login prompt before login? Did X (Graphics) attempt to lanuch on boot and then crashed and dropped you to a text login - or did you see the KDM login and just could not log in successfully (or were dropped to a shell)?

A normal screen appears, with my user, waiting for the password. After that blinks a small white rectangle at the upper left corner, a blue screen appears sliced horizontally and, first it returns to initial login screen and second the screen becomes black with that text: "(process 293...."

I couldn't find anything related to your problem in /var/log/messages. That doesn't mean there isn't anything in it - I may just be not smart enough to have seen it at first glance :wink:
You do seem to have a messed-up X-config file.
Another log file is the X log file -- that one may be informative if X crashed on you:
/var/log/Xorg.0.log, or a similar name at that location

That makes the posts and the thread better readable.

In any case, I looked into the xorg-logfile of yours and couldn't find any errors. Next we could look at is the kde4rc file (is it in /etc? I am not sitting on a KDE machine right now. Possibly a subdir of /etc). We can just try and locate the error.

This is a normal error in Debian/Ubuntu based distributions due to updating the base system, that can be usually be ignored or a minor work-around with the shift key..

Do you detect any problems with the system, if you simply wait for the boot and login to complete..

In Linux, Debian style (including Ubuntu), you can usually load the previous kernel and try again, maybe an update-grub is needed or some other step, reapply the updates you used or if you know it, take off the update that cause the problem

I tried it. Black screen. Crash, I think. I had to reboot.

Apart of all this. Is there any issue with Libreoffice? I was just trying to get apart from Oracle's openoffice.

This is a normal error in Debian/Ubuntu based distributions due to updating the base system, that can be usually be ignored or a minor work-around with the shift key.
I am by-passing it loging at console.
Do you detect any problems with the system, if you simply wait for the boot and login to complete.

It shows black screen with that message "(process 293...Glib warning..."
In Linux, Debian style (including Ubuntu), you can usually load the previous kernel and try again, maybe an update-grub is needed or some other step, reapply the updates you used or if you know it, take off the update that cause the problem
As it was an automatic update, I don't know what has been done, in spite of I had to agree with it.

Before quoting, I tried to find something, but almost all problems occur on installing.

It is the first problem I had at Mint. It is really nice. As I had installed many other dists before, including Ubuntu and Kubuntu, I am satisfied. If there is no solution, I will not reinstall. After some updates it will vanish, I am sure.

I got the solution. I tried all kind of suggestion found at KDE forum, but had no results.
I intended to have an option to Kde and installed xfce. It was very nice to see it login in fast. But I had no more the option to login KDE. I changed my mind and uninstalled xfce to try to recover kde. So, the miracle happened. I received just an advice from X that had to alternate to default (kde). Next login I chose KDE and the problem disappeared.
The only problem is that I don´t know what really happened. I think xfce restablished something kde or libreoffice or some upgrade or all they together had spoiled.

Using Xfce9 with updates. Recently been getting crashes to black screen with total lock-out needing hard reset.
Today, it happened again but got the '242' message as well. No idea why. Always have quite a few tabs and windows open but number of these doesn't seem to affect crashes. Running one of the KPatience games seems to prompt a crash, but only occasionally. Can't discover any obvious precursor. Any ideas, please?
