Configuring the MATE Panel
The first cascading menu I ever saw was on an SGI IRIS Indigo back when PCs were running DOS 3. I thought it was a fantastic concept. When Microsloth brought out New Shell for Win NT 4 I soon decided that the Start menu concept rather sucked. When I first used the Gnome 2 panel... Now this is effici...

Re: force installer to use MBR/DOS partitioning?
I will definitely have to give ventoy a look. I have a flash drive wallet filler with 1 and 2 GB drives with various utilities. They are all USB2 and thus are a little slow.

Re: force installer to use MBR/DOS partitioning?
Well kiss my FOX  Foxclone does the job with no fuss, no bother. It is simply a matter of squashing the partitions containing data so they will fit on the target drive. Partimage is included on the live image for this purpose. I had done this with my initial, manual attempt. Foxclone handle...

Re: force installer to use MBR/DOS partitioning?
Thank you sanmig, Agreed - "clone" is probably the wrong term. What I am really after is to copy the OS to a new drive of a smaller size. In the case of these small flash drives the OS is the only thing on the drive so everything is getting copied over. On a typical drive I set it up like:...

Re: force installer to use MBR/DOS partitioning?
Thank you Cosmo, I was going to try that and will do so. When I install Linux on a REAL hard drive I always manually specify the drive layout within the installer. While the Mint installer allows me to do so it did not have a GPT or other option. I have just completed a rather exhaustive series of t...

force installer to use MBR/DOS partitioning?
When I install Mint 20.3 to a USB flash drive the installer formats the device with GPT. I am using the flash drive in an Intel NUC which serves as a gateway, firewall and VPN sharing box between my LAN and the Internet. It does not need any storage, just enough to boot the OS and run a couple of pr...

Re: Personal startup application
Thanks xenopeek,
I ses a .desktop file in that directory corresponding to the program I am starting. It appears to contain all of the settings I specified in the GUI. This gives me a start.

Personal startup application
I know how to setup an application to stat when the user logs in by the GUI System; Preferences; Personal; Startup Applications. My questions are: Where is this information stored? and can I setup an application to start using the command line. I cannot use cron as the daemon in question requires a ...

Re: Automatic updates - reboot new kernel?
Thanks spamegg,
The dialog you show is from the manual update process. I believe the automatic update runs in background. If that is the case, would this dialog still pop up?

Automatic updates - reboot new kernel?
I have several virtual machines running Mint 20.3 in VMWare player on a CentOS 7 workstation. Some of the VMs run most or all of the time and some others I only spin up for specific purposes. I have been manually updating but I thought I might try the automatic process. It is simple to configure via...

Re: apt-get upgrade / update doesn't do everything
Thanks for the heads up on dist-upgrade. My script sort of grew over time. I tacked on the dist-upgrade so I did not have to chase down kernel updates separately and the --purge after I got tired ot manually cleaning old kernel headers. As far as automatic updates... I generally see the updates avai...

Re: apt-get upgrade / update doesn't do everything
Considering that I am: a) lazy b) spoiled by years of using the single command sudo yum update -y in CentOS c) infested with a lot of Ubuntu and Mint machines and virtual machines I have created this script which I call "up" #!/bin/bash sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade -y; sudo ap...

Re: copy and paste to external drive freezes
I copy my monthly data backup to a 16 GB flash drive. It is reasonably speedy but not compared to other storage. As my system has 32 GB of RAM the data appears to copy the first 99% VERY quickly as it is being read from a high speed PCIe drive to RAM where it is cached. It then takes a while for the...

Re: Finding programs with no GUI
For wine you will probably want to run winecft at least initially. This allows you to configure "drive" letters and various other stuff. I am running the 32 bit version of wine on Mint Mate 20.3 to support a legacy program - FoxPro :-) and for some reason winecfg does not appear on the Mat...

Re: My access to Root is blocked
To manage software you are better off using apt or apt-get (they are pretty much the same.) Something like sudo apt-get remove --purge libreoffice* I am not sure where you will get OpenOffice from. Most likely you will need to manually download OpenOffice. It would be better if you can find a reposi...

Re: Flash drive big problems
Perhaps your 16 GB flash drive is really not what it appears. I purchased a 64GB micro-SD card some years back on evilbay. I turned out to be a fake. It announced itself as a 64 GB device but would not store anything like that. Here is a page which might be of interest. https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq...

Re: Change text color for items on Desktop
Thanks rossdv8, I am running Mate, not Cinnamon. I find nothing in the file manager preferences related to font. I probably need to find a Mate tweak program or something like that. I have not needed to use one for a long time as Mate meets my needs out of the box (or I have become accustom to any l...
