Re: Shut down problem

Two points which may help. 1st point: I think you made a slight mistake editing the grub file hanson53. I think the acpi=force needs to be inside quotes, like this: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi=force" 2nd point: Could this be related to TLP? I did not have a shutdown prob...

Re: Shut down problem

FYI, you should not use sudo with a GUI text editor. Will mess up permissions in your home folder. For xed, use xed admin:///etc/default/grub . The only time sudo would be appropriate is if using nano, the command line text editor. Then, sudo nano /etc/default/grub . nano is a nifty liitle text edi...

Re: Shut down problem

Something else to check. Unmount all external USB drives before you shut down a few times and see if there's any difference, then shut down with them still mounted. If there;s a difference you will have an idea where to look for a solution. I had that problem on Mint 19.3 for a while and it annoyed...

Re: Shut down problem

Hey, Have you tried this video?: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZZBTSUbzT0g It worked for me. Matt. Tried the Youtube changes but it made no difference on my machine, it does not shutdown without long press on Power button. My Grub file is: # If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards t...

Re: Shut down problem

Should the sequence work after the Shutdown failed or should it be done from the Desktop screen after all windows have been closed? No, it usually won't work if you've already shutdown and then the system hangs. Nor is REISUO a good way to shutdown as a matter of routine. The reason for trying it -...

Re: Linux Mint doesn't want to shut down

Right, hanson53 , did you try the 4.15 kernel? I am currently running 4.15.0-70-generic which I find is quite stable and does not crash as often as 4.15.0-99 or 101 did; having said that the system did crash while editing this response :( I have tried several versions of 4.15, obviously not all, an...

Re: Shut down problem

had to resort to a long press on the power button to completely power down my laptop Don't do this , you run the risk of corrupting the filesystem. Instead Alt + PrtScn + REISUO (shutdown) or REISUB for reboot. Have you tried shutdown now in a terminal, does it behave the same? If so try halt -p or...

Re: Shut down problem

Ahem, that's a long thread and the last post was ten years ago. Lynne , please put the log report in a code box. Edit the post (little pencil icon); type
at the beginning of the log and
at the end. Also, it's not clear. Did you try REISUO , as suggested above? I have tried this seque...

Re: Shut down problem

I have removed the short life kernels (5.3.0-51-generic) from Update Manager and yesterday upgraded the long term support kernel 4.15.0-99 to the latest version: lynne@lynne-Inspiron-3551:~$ uname -or 4.15.0-101-generic GNU/Linux lynne@lynne-Inspiron-3551:~$ lsb_release -irc Distributor ID: LinuxMin...

Re: Shut down problem

Sorry for delay in responding, I have been feeling ill :( Anyway I did eventually succeed in navigating my way through the Grub menu and managed to boot up using the 4.15.0-99-generic kernel. Unfortunately this displayed the same behaviour as 5.3.0-51 and failed to shut down from the commands - had ...

Shut down problem

Re: libavcodec update?

I have the same issue running LinuxMint 17.1 and Firefox 50. Mozilla Firefox 50 seems to be a bad release as I keep getting this annoying problem with the BBC Radio Times web page, adverts down each side duplicate across the page and prevent the user reading the page.
