Re: And another one gets put on my refuse to use list !!!
Yes. There are Windows and Linux versions of the desktop program, so you install that, plug in a decent capacity blank USB stick, run the desktop program and have it install Ventoy to that stick. After it's done, that USB stick will appear as "Ventoy" to a computer. Just copy a bunch of IS...

Re: Windows - what do you use it for?
I have to use Windows at work, and I have a fairly cheap HP laptop with Windows 11 at home for the lone purpose of updating the firmware in my Olympus camera & lenses. I usually run Mint 21.2 MATE on that laptop via external SSD, though. (My other computers - both older Dells, a desktop and a ta...

I think it's because Windows has no clue how to read the ext4 file system that Linux uses.

Re: Mint and GRUB on USB SSD
I used the unflag/reflag method from that post. Worked perfectly. If I don't connect the external SSD before booting, the laptop boots straight to Windows. If I do connect it, the laptop boots grub and I can choose Mint or Windows.

Re: Install to separate HDD
When you're running Mint from your USB stick, you can run gPartEd and use it to temporarily uncheck the boot and ESP flags of the Windows EFI partition. Then you can install Mint to your other drive, select "Continue testing" when the installation finishes, then use gPartEd again to rechec...

Re: Installing LM Victoria alongside w11
I recently installed Mint 21.2 on an external SSD. In addition to the UEFI, root, and home partitions, I have a NTFS partition called "Stuff." If I boot my laptop with the SSD unplugged, Windows boots; if I boot with the SSD connected, the grub menu appears and I can boot either Mint or Wi...

Ventoy is pretty cool! I have 8 Linux ISOs from Puppy to Mint 21.2, which I set up with persistence just for fun. Pretty much anything that can boot from USB should boot from this thing.

Re: Screen shot of just one screen?
Not sure if it works the same in Linux (I don't have a dual monitor setup at home) but in Windows make sure your focus is on the monitor you want to screenshot and hold Alt down while pressing Print Screen.

Re: Dual boot with external SSD
I did that with my old work computer--installed Mint 20.1 MATE to an external SSD, making sure to install grub to that SSD too. I changed the BIOS boot order so the computer would look first to USB, then to the HDD. It worked pretty well--if I had the SSD plugged in, the computer booted to Mint, and...

Re: Installing Mint to external HD dual boot question
I installed Mint 20.1 MATE to an external SSD, then set the BIOS of my old work computer to look first to USB, then HDD, then CD Drive for boot. (GRUB was installed to the SSD too.) If I wanted to run Mint, I'd plug in the SSD before booting. If I wanted to run Windows I'd leave the SSD unplugged. W...

Re: install to usb on Linux but use on Windows?
I installed Mint 20.1 to an external USB hard drive just for fun, then changed the BIOS settings on my old work PC (retired because Win7 is EOL) so it would look to USB first for bootable media, then the internal HDD. If I plugged my portable drive in before powering the PC up, it booted Mint; if I ...

Re: Speech recognition software
Many years ago (1999 or so), my then-wife wanted to use a talk-to-type program because she's dyslexic. (She also has a speech impediment, but we figured the program would learn its way around that.) While trying to train the program to recognize her speech (she had to read a paragraph and the progra...

Re: heck, LM isn't a bad disc recovery or network manager OS
I carry a little Staples Relay USB drive (not much bigger than a USB plug itself) in my pocket with the LM 18 MATE image on it for exactly that purpose. I even rescued a laptop that my workplace was tossing by making it boot Mint.

Re: Why do newcomers stay with Mint?
I have used Linux Mint Cinnamon, MATE, and XFCE on various computers at home since Windows Vista was EOL'd. It does everything I need to do and is incredibly easy to set up compared to any version of Windows I've had the misfortune of having to (re)install. I can also copy my browser bookmarks, sett...

Re: What are the advantages of the Pixel 3 smartphone over many other phones besides the camera?
Speed of updates, mainly. Pixel phones get Google's updates (security and other) right away (so do Essential phones), while others often don't. Carrier-branded phones get updates only after the carrier gets, tests, and releases them.

It just makes unnecessary work and headaches , where a " sum over all particles " approach would work fine . It's even simpler if you treat the mass of the Sun as a single particle. I don't know why, but that reminds me of this one... "you know you're a mathematician if you assume a ...

Re: SD memory card from Canon camera not detected
How old is your computer and how big is the card's capacity? Some older built-in readers can't handle anything more than 2GB. Can you connect your camera to the computer via USB cable and have the computer see it? Usually, after connecting the cable to both devices you press the "review" b...
