The Pain and Power of Linux!
I've basically become a die-hard Linux fan. Constantly looking for ways to eliminate Windows, avoid Macs, and appreciate the wide variety of experiences that using Linux brings. As I have posted before, I have a multi-computer household, where most computers run Linux, including my NAS's (NASii?). T...

Re: How to make your home printer shared/network
I've basically bought only network-attached printers over the last 10 years. It's so much easier plugging the printer into a router (or switch) and just installing it on each machine. Many newer routers also have USB ports for sharing printers and/or external HD's, etc. I've not tried it out, but my...

Re: This is when you realize how far Linux has come...
I have a dual-boot machine still, but the frequency of loading into Windows is so rare (about 2-3 times a year for a 5- or 10-minute thing). I do admit to keeping a VM of Win7 so I can still use Xara (man, I wish they'd have stuck with their linux development). Other than Xara, there's no reason for...

Simple Remote Desktop management (GUI)?
What is the simplest way to remotely administer computers on the same internal LAN under Mint / Linux? I have two kids, both running Mint 17.2 (one is Xfce, other is Cinnamon) and I am running 17.2 KDE. I'd like to basically do their updating and installing from my computer. We are not connected to ...

Software worth paying for (non-FOSS, Commercial GPL, etc)
I love linux, I love Mint. I often support free and open source software, but occasionally, there is some software out there that is not entirely Free Open Source Software (FOSS). I know some people like to be pure, 100% FOSS. That's awesome, more power to you! However, I have come to rely on some s...

Thank you for the reply and information. I am not familiar with Arch, so did not pick up the AUR thing. Good to know.

Re: [KDE] Re-positioning OnScreenDisplay (OSD) of Volume
...But what is exactly your problem with the position? Is it in front of something else, or does it cover too much of your screen, .... ? Nothing that extreme, just I like to tweak and customize - the attraction of KDE - and this was one element I would like to lock to the top or side of the screen...

How is software chosen to be in the repos?
I was curious how the various software is chosen to be included in the repositories. The reason being, I would love to see the trial version of Pixeluvo included. I believe they added it to Gentoo(?) and Arch (definitely). It's a great GIMP alternative, and worth it's price for me. Does Mint ever in...

[KDE] Re-positioning OnScreenDisplay (OSD) of Volume
I was searching for a way to re-position the on screen display (OSD) of the volume slider; I thought kmix controlled it, and it "sort of" seems to. If I uncheck the on screen display, it is not displayed; however the vertical / horizontal options do not change the orientation... plus there...

Re: getting conky calendar to work
I am not sure what's happening in that script (I even made sure the spanish was translated to english in the case). I didn't use ncal in my calendar conky script portion, but cal. I remember monkeying with the "cal" CLI calendar and integrating it into my conky script. I wanted 2 months be...

Updated my script, yet again, to search for the roccat mouse and reset the bus/device it is on... for posterity, should anyone be looking for a ½-ass script to reset a specific USB bus from the terminal, via lsusb and grep with numeric values passed to variables. #! /bin/bash NORM="\033[0m"...

Re: Scanner works in 32 bit Mate but not 64 bit Cinnamon
I am somewhat convinced this is a Kernel issue, as I had my LiDE 200 working just fine in 17.2 with it's default Kernel. I even updated the Kernel once or twice. I am currently on 3.16.0-38 and it gives the failed to start error. Oddly, after randomly unplugging / re-plugging, I can *sometimes* get ...

Re: Top 50 Proprietary apps and their Open Source Alternativ
Been trying to replace my desktop publisher in Windows with Scribus, but Scribus' search function hasn't been giving the results I wanted. The program itself is fine and could rival commercial apps, but when I try to search text or group of words, not necessarily to replace them, but to add or edit...

Re: Printer issues on Mint 17.2 Rafaela
You may also want to attempt to get the latest HPLIP directly from their website. It's a bit clunky and is a bear of a process just for a printer, but that is how I use it for my Enterprise m551 Color laser, and it works wonderfully.

Re: The difference of different versions
I have three computers that all run mint 17.2 now; we started with Mint 16 a year or two ago (three?). Anyways, my two boys and I all have been running it and we each have different flavors. We all game via Steam (common game library on NAS, except for CS:GO - which needs to be local, really), and h...

Re: <WORK-AROUND> Roccat Tyon resume from sleep issue 17.2 K
The author of the Roccat linux driver & utility replied thusly: Can't reproduce this. Used the hardware sniffer on a box with kernel 4.1.5 and a USB2 port. The Linux kernel handles the wakeup differently, but I would say more thorough, than Windows. Sets Device Remote Wakeup followed by two devi...

Re: [SOLVED] Brother printer stopped in mid-job
First of all, glad it was resolved - I know how frustrating something like this can be.
Next, at least it's not as dumb a reason as "is it plugged in?" would be! =) I've hit that one before!
Cheers!

<WORK-AROUND> Roccat Tyon resume from sleep issue 17.2 KDE
I recently needed to replace my dying Logitech MX518 (why they stopped making this is beyond me). Anyway, I found the Roccat Tyon an acceptable replacement. Man, what an awesome mouse! I added the Roccat PPA , updated and installed. Ran the config utility and BAM! Total mouse customization available...
