Re: Fn Keys Not Working
Interesting! I went into the BIOS and it has a mode called "Action Keys Mode". I didn't understand how it works exactly, but it says that you have to press F1 through F12 in order to activate the Fn keys. I tried it and in fact the Fn keys started working already when I got to F4 :). Now t...

Fn Keys Not Working
Hello. I installed Linux Mint 21 Cinnamon (64 bit) on a new HP 255 G8 laptop. The only problem is that the Fn key is not working, so I can't change the volume or the screen brightness with the keyboard. It seems like the OS doesn't detect that the Fn key is held down - and the apps respond to the ke...

Re: Laptop won't suspend
Kaye - If you have 3 gigabytes of RAM you need a 6GB swap partition. No way it will work with only 1.5. This is because the memory is written to swap when you suspend it (that's how Linux wakes up after that and restores everything to its previous state), and you need place to hold all that memory +...

Re: "Shut Down" button will not respond. Help!
I don't have a 100% solution for this, but I saw this problem a few times and I find that disabling compiz helps to fix it. To disable compiz, from the Control Center click on "Appearance" and then in the "Visual Effects" tab choose "None". I hope you'll be able to shut...

Re: Laptop won't suspend
For hibernate to work you need a large enough swap. How much RAM does your laptop have and how big is the swap? How many running apps do you have when you hibernate? I also see from your previous posts on the same issue that hibernate used to work sometimes on your laptop, and now it doesn't work at...

Re: Intel 82801H microphone problems
Try playing around with the audio mixer. Open the audio mixer by double-clicking on the volume control icon in the corner of the screen, then enable the different mic input settings from the preferences and the capture devices. Usually the problem is that the mic is muted.

Re: connecting to internet???
You don't really volunteer a lot of information, do you? We'll need to know if you have a permanent connection, if you connect using a modem, what kind of connection you have (ADSL?) etc... Be very specific on what hardware you have (even specify the model of every device) and also specify what you ...

Re: How to Install, Well Anything
Sane is installed by default with Mint, try using the Mint scanner utility first. If you want Xsane or any other application - look for it in the package manager (Synaptic). You can find Synaptic in the menu and also in the control center. It's very easy to install anything with it - you just select...

Re: How do I replace Firefox 3 for 2 in LM6?
Extract the tar.gz file anywhere you want and make a symbolic link from /usr/local/bin to the firefox binary. That way it will take precedence over anything in /usr/bin and it will be used by default instead of version 3. I think this way is better because if you try to remove version 3 you will ent...

Re: Hibernate Problem
You didn't say anything about what sound card you have.... Anyways, I looked for possible solutions to the problem you describe and this is what I found (one of these might help you): 1) Upgrade to Felicia. You have a powerful machine - why the old Linux? There was a bug in ACPI that is related to y...

Re: Virtualization Issue
It is possible to use a real drive as a disk of a virtual machine, and run your copy of Windows under Linux, but I wouldn't recommend this approach. Microsoft are very sensitive about their intellectual property rights and what you are doing is in fact sharing a copy of Windows on 2 machines (one re...

I don't have your scanner so I don't know the answer. However, I searched for the problem and I think you may find this link helpful: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/sane-backends-extras/+bug/72321 So it appears that Brother support scanning on Linux - and maybe you can actually contact th...

Re: how to apt-get install updat, upgrade
The "install" is redundant in both cases.
"sudo apt-get update" will update the indexes (it won't install or upgrade any packages). You need "update" in case apt-get complains that it can't find URLs....
"sudo apt-ger upgrade" will upgrade your system.

I don't have a GeForce, so there isn't much more I can do to help you. BUT - the forum is full of posts regarding your hardware, so you can just look around and you should find an answer pretty quick. If not, open another post . . .
Good luck.

Re: Problems with DVD-ROM and DVD-RW/RAM drive
I had a pretty similar problem, but not exactly the same that you are experiencing so I don't know if my answer will be good for you... If you can't eject the CDROM from the GUI, try the "eject" or "eject /dev/cdrom" from the terminal. It seems to set the GUI straight after that....

Re: Ext3 disk shows as ntfs
Partitions are tagged when they are created. You had an NTFS partition and now you formatted it but it is still tagged as NTFS. You can easily fix that with fdisk without having to repartition or anything... In fdisk, choose the "t" command (t = type), then choose the partition number, the...

Open the Control Center and go in to "Screen Resolution".
If you still don't have the option to go above 60 Hz then provide us with more details on your hardware (which graphics card you have?).

That is an excellent question, and I'll start off by saying that I ***don't*** know the answer, and this subject puzzles me for years. But since nobody else seems to know either, I'll give you what I ***think*** is the answer. Things like wireless network and audio are started in Linux as services w...
